PURPOSE

It is the policy of KBD to perform work in the safest manner possible, in accordance with the Canada Labour Code, Part II.

Protecting employees from workplace injury and disease is our major continuing objective and the Management is committed to providing a safe, healthy workplace.

SCOPE

Health and safety is paramount at KBD Transportation. Each of us, regardless of our level, or the work we do, has a role in creating and maintaining an injury-free workplace. While Management has the prime responsibility for managing health and safety, our decisions and actions, regardless of where we work in the company, can affect our own personal safety, and the safety of others.

All employees will:

  • make safety a primary consideration in every decision and every action;
  • take responsibilities for their actions and learn from experiences to prevent future incidents or near misses;
  • identify, anticipate and report potential hazards. The appropriate personnel will take corrective action to prevent occupational injury, disease, and accidents.

The Management of KBD Transportation:

  • regard compliance with health and safety laws, standards, and procedures as the minimum standard
  • is committed to develop and put in place appropriate work practices, tools, equipment, and training so that all employees have the ability to identify hazards and deal with them effectively;
  • will obtain input from employees on issues which have an impact on their health and safety;
  • will continue to review and improve our health and safety procedures and systems to achieve the highest standard;
  • will set challenging goals and targets, monitor performance, and celbrate successes.
 

DEFINITIONS

Hazard Any practice, behavour, condition, or combination that can cause injury or illness in people or damage to property.
Near Miss An event that under different circumstances could have resulted in physical harm to an individual or damage to the environment, equipment, property and/or material.
Incident An event that may result in a crisis.

COMMUNICATION

The investigation results of the injury/incidents will be communicated to the employees in a number of ways:

  • Minutes of the Joint Health & Safety Committee Meetings
  • Supervisors holding safety talks with employees
  • Postings on the bulletin boards

The Joint Health & Safety Committee will be directly involved in investigations and recommendations for disciplinary action.

Notification Requirements:

  • Critical and fatal injuries (under Critical Injury Regulation) require you to contact the HRSDC (800.463.2493) immediately and a written investigation report must be completed and sent within 48 hours.
  • Lost time, health care, modified work, required as a result of first aid and only extending beyond 7 days. Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) - Form 7 to be completed within 3 days of being advised of an injury and submitted to WSIB within 7 days.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Manager/Supervisor

  • The Manager/Supervisor investigates the injury/incident and completes the Hazardous Occurrence Investigation form (LAB 1070) within 24 hours of the injury/incident.
  • In the case of personal injury, the Supervisor ensures that the injured employee(s) receives appropriate medical care.
  • The Supervisor contacts a worker representative from the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) designated to investigate the injury/incident, to assist with the investigation.
  • The Supervisor notifies the appropriate personnel as soon as possible:
    • Internal - by contacting the Health & Safety Co-ordinator.
    • External - see Communication section.
